by Gary Keller & Jay Papasan
This book builds on a single focusing question: what is the one thing you can do such that by doing it everything else becomes easier or unnecessary? Its argument is that extraordinary results come not from doing many things but from finding the domino that knocks down the rest. The book pushes back hard against the idea that everything is equally important, insisting instead on a strict priority — one thing at a time, one thing at a time, until the chain of priorities becomes clear. For someone building a process, the lesson is about the courage to ignore good options in favor of the best one. Most of us drown in a list of equally weighted tasks and finish the day having touched everything and completed nothing that matters. The discipline this book teaches is to keep asking, at every level, what the one thing is right now — and then to give that one thing your full attention until it's done. It's a simple idea that's surprisingly hard to live, because it requires you to disappoint everything else.
Find the domino
There's usually one action that makes the others easier or unnecessary. The work is to find it, not to do more.
Not everything matters equally
Treating every task as equal spreads you thin. Priority means choosing what comes first, and what doesn't come at all.
Ask the focusing question
'What's the one thing I can do such that by doing it everything else becomes easier or unnecessary?' Ask it at every level.
Time block your one thing
Protect a regular block for your most important work. Without defended time, the urgent will always win.
Live the priority
Knowing your one thing isn't enough. You have to act on it before everything else competes for your attention.
The lesson becomes more powerful when you connect it to your own life.
If you had to name the single most important thing in your work right now, could you — and does your week reflect it?
What 'good' options are you currently saying yes to that are quietly starving your one most important thing?
What is the one thing you could do today such that doing it would make everything else easier or unnecessary?
Write down your one thing for today. Time-block one hour for it before anything else, and protect that hour completely.
